Brussels, Jan 12 () - European Commission extended condolences to the families of the victims killed in the bomb attack in Istanbul’s central Sultanahmet district, urging the EU and Turkey would “stand united against all forms of terrorism”.
An explosion in the touristic Sultanahmet Square has killed 10 people and left at least 15 wounded, on Jan. 12. The victims are thought to be amongst foreigners.
“Turkey has once again been targeted by a terrorist attack” underlined the written statement of High Representative/Vice-President Federica Mogherini and Commissioner Johannes Hahn.
“The fight against terrorism was recognised as a priority at the EU-Turkey Summit on 29 November 2015 and we must step up our efforts in this regard in full respect of our obligations under international law, including human rights and humanitarian law” said the statement.
Deputy Prime Minister Numan Kurtulmuş confirmed the deadly Sultanahmet blast on Jan. 12 was caused by a suicide attack and the bomber was identified as a Syrian born in 1988.
Systematic attacks have continued in Turkey since June 5 last year he added, urging for more international support and more coordination in the struggle against terrorism.
