Ümit Türk / Istanbul, May 4 () - Police forced a group of lawyers out of Istanbul's largest court house on Monday, by using guard plates, who were protesting the violence during the May Day demonstrations.
The lawyers gathered in the court house to read a press statement, to protest the violence and arrests on May Day. More than 400 people were arrested during the protests against the police blockade in Istanbul's Taksim district.
Istanbul’s Taksim Square and surrounding districts were on lockdown by more than 20 thousand police officers, and water cannons (TOMA) and iron crush barriers to prevent celebrations of May Day.
Taksim Square has symbolic meaning for the Turkish left, as over 30 people were killed in 1977 when suspected nationalists opened fire on May Day participants from what is now the Marmara Hotel.
