Felat Bozarslan / Diyarbakır, Nov 9 () – Ministry of Family and Social Policies has appealed a court decision in Turkey’s southeastern province of Diyarbakır, where a rape suspect’s sentence has been reduced for “respectful stance”.
The court has awarded the rape defendant in a sense, by unjustly reducing the sentence, said the Ministry lawyer Remzi Atalay, in his petition.
The 22-year-old suspect has been accused of beating and raping a 14-year-old.
Diyarbakır 2nd criminal court has first sentenced the defendant to 14 years jail time on charges of “sexual harassment of a child” and “deprivation of liberty for sexual harassment.” However, the judge then has reduced the sentence to 11 years and eight months due to the “respectful stance” of the suspect and for wearing a tie during the trial.
“The court has ignored the report proving the victim’s mental health has been severely affected. The report’s conclusion part, which was in favor of the defendant, capitalized and in bold letters, was passed to the justified decision.
The petition stressed that act of the defendant included force and threat, Atalay called the court to reverse the judgement, which is “far from being objective and legal grounds”.
