Nafiz Albayrak / New York, Nov 3 () - The U.S. has urged Turkish authorities to uphold the values of its constitution amid reports on “pressure on media outlets”, following the Nov. 1 snap elections marking the agenda of Turkey.
White House spokesperson Josh Earnest said the U.S. was deeply concerned that media outlets and journalists were subject to pressure during the Turkish election campaign, after congratulating the election results where the Justice and Development Party has regained the majority it lost in June.
Josh Earnest added, U.S. President Barack Obama has made a statement on the Air Force One, where he congratulated Turkey for its choice, and urged Turkish authorities to uphold the values of its constitution, amid reports over pressure on journalists in order to weaken political opposition.
The İpek media outlets were stormed by riot police shortly after dawn on Oct. 28, with police handcuffing and injuring several journalists employed by the group.
The broadcasting of İpek Media Group television stations Bugün TV and Kanaltürk was cut by a board of trustees appointed to take over management.
