Istanbul, May 6 () - Domestic tourism spendings rose by 22.7 percent in 2014, sixfolding the number of overnights rose by 3.3 percent over the same period, according to tha Household Domestic Tourism data released by Turkstat on Wednesday.

Domestic trips increased by 3.6 percent in 2014 to 71 million against in the previous year, while total number of overnights increased by 3.3 percent over the same period.

While average number of overnights was at 8.1, total trip expenditures of domestic tourists increased by 22.7 percent compared to the previous year and reached to 22.6 billion lira.

Domestic tourism expenditures was composed of individual expenditures and package tour expenditures.

Annually, while 94.9 percent of domestic tourism expenditure was individual, 5.1 percent of it was package tour expenditures.

"Visiting relatives" was the primary purpose of trip with 65.7 percent, secondary purpose of trip was "travel, leisure, holiday" with 19 percent and the third was "health" with 8.4 percent.

Domestic visitors stayed mostly at "house of friend and relative" with 406 million 227 thousand overnights.

"Own house" took second place with 94 million 287 thousand overnights and "hotel" took third place with 31 million 407 thousand overnights.
