Istanbul, Oct 26 () - A Turkish woman who was shot and heavily wounded during a police operation last week in Istanbul died in hospital on Oct. 25.
Dilek Doğan, 25, was seriously injured on Oct. 18 when she was shot during a police search inside her house with her family in the Küçükarmutlu district of Istanbul as part of an operation against the outlawed Revolutionary People’s Liberation Party-Front (DHKP-C). She died in hospital after a week in a coma.
“The murderer of our client, Dilek Doğan, is the AKP” the lawyers representing the Doğan family said in a Twitter message immediately after she died on Oct. 25, referring to the ruling Justice and Development Party (AKP).
According to her family, Doğan was shot by a police officer following a quarrel that erupted after she asked police officers to wear galoshes instead of just barging into the house.
“Four police officers entered our home with their shoes on” Metin Doğan, Dilek Doğan’s father, said after the incident.
“We told the police officer who shot my daughter to wear galoshes, he refused. Then he pointed his gun at us and my daughter was shot. The police officers left the house in a panic. There was not a clash in our house; a scuffle erupted after the police shot my daughter” he added.
Istanbul police, in contrast, stated that Doğan was shot in the chest during a scuffle as one of the residents of the house tried to seize police officer's gun.
At the time, police also told the woman’s mother, Aysel Doğan, that her brother had shot his sister.
A probe was launched into the incident, but the lawyers of the Doğan family were not informed about the process or the evidence in the file due to a secrecy ruling by an Istanbul court.
Doğan’s body was taken to the Küçükarmutlu Cemevi following an autopsy at the Forensic Medicine Institute.
