Mehmet Aktaran / Istanbul, Aug 27 () - In central Beyoğlu district, around 200 people within the “Defenders of Life” initiative protested the flood disaster in Black Sea having marked the agenda this week.

In Artvin province, particularly Hopa district, a flood disaster after disastrous rain and landslides has left eight people killed, and a debate has sparked regarding constructions and tea growing areas, especially hydroelectric plants, claimed to have triggered the deadly flood.

The protesters having defended the major nature massacres in the region have caused the flood disaster marched on the Istiklal street with banners and placards, chanting slogans against government policies.

“The regulation of the rainfall has been subverted due to hydroelectric power plants and retaining walls. The climate has subverted after the constructions of dams and an excessive amount of rainfall, such like haven’t been witnessed in the last 50 years, caused a major disaster. Long with agriculture of tea which has disrupted the ecological structure of Black Sea, forests became tea gardens, leading to landslides” said the press statement of the group.

The protesters added “the attempt of the capital to enact laws to ease pillaging of the nature, for the sake of the capital, while considering nature to be meta, and the political authories’ attitude protecting benefit of the capital are among the biggest mistakes that have led to a disaster.”
