Tolunay Duman / Mersin, July 2 () - In southern province of Mersin, people whirled, performed a customary dance among Alevis, to protest the 22nd anniversary of the Sivas massacre, referring to the events of July 2, 1993.
 
Thirty-seven people, mostly Alevi intellectuals who have gathered for a cultural event in Sivas have died, many were burnt alive when the Madimak Hotel was set on fire by a mob associated to radical and fundamentalist religious movements.
 
In Mersin’s Tarsun district, - two hundred people - members of Pir Sultan Abdal Cultural Association and the Labor Platform (Emek Platformu) whirled in the arena where the manifestations have taken place.

Demonstrators held placards with pictures of people who have lost their lives in the massacre and banners reading, “We did not forget, we will not forget”, shouting “The light of Sivas will not die.”
