Fatih Karaçalı - Murat Kibritoğlu - Akif Özdemir / Istanbul, May 26 () - Main opposition Republican People’s Party (CHP) deputy candidate Elif Doğan Türkmen was wounded in an armed attack at around 9 a.m. on May 26 in a restaurant in the southern Turkish province of Adana.

Türkmen, who is running for parliament on the CHP ticket as the party’s first candidate from Adana, was injured in the knee after gunshots were fired while she was on her way to a breakfast event, Adana Governor Mustafa Büyük said.

Türkmen was hospitalized with not life-threatening injuries, Büyük said. Police have launched an investigation into the incident.

The vehicle used in the assault was found abandoned and was identified as a rental car, Büyük said, adding that the assailants were being sought.

On May 18, bombs had exploded at two local headquarters of the Kurdish problem-focused Peoples’ Democratic Party (HDP) in Adana and neighboring Mersin. Hidden in a cargo parcel and a gift-packaged flower pot, the two bombs injured four people and damaged the buildings.
